Very well written and constructed argument Peter, Thankyou, as you say 'we can't change the past'. I would add that the 'past' has a right to dignity too, there were many indigenous-supporters back then as there are today. Although no matter what 'theories' are brought about 'Australia' was never going to remain a stone-age nation - and historically the British were the most humane colonizers. Of course there was always going to be arguments, unfortunately that has been the way all through human history. We see it with middle-eastern emigration versus europeans post-war to the 1970s - fortunately there were greater laws in place to avoid bloodshed - else it would have been as lawless as the nineteenth century. I think Australia in pretty good faith has tried to rectify this even with limitations that exist. 20/20 hindsight is a refuge not only for the scoundrel but also for the ill of tolerance. If ANY peoples wish to cast themselves upon a golden throne they may find themselves in a gilded cage instead. Australia, from what I can tell is a very fair and tolerant society today, more fair than most others, some would say Overly fair - I don't know about that. Can we attack the past, the present and the future??? Some try - I say hypocricy. Social problems should not be lumped on to those who are innocent. It is all politicking now - and the power that emanates from that. I for one will always make my decisions on tolerance, fairness, equity and equality and not be coralled by opposing opinions - especially the political variety - unless by exceptional or extraordinary circumstanes. ❤
