I sought the darkened wood
Black as coal some would say
A vista even fools might fear to tread
No supplicant had I
But nor a supplement to inspire
Only given free advice for all my sins
Cloaked in a lion’s skin
But I held it tight within
For one day to become
One day join the righteous
From the pitfalls of the pious
Yet had I not gone and sought the darkened wood
That’s now where I stood
Perhaps I could conquer fear itself
Slay even Lucifer’s demesne
But other roads veered off the beaten trek
Not black as coal, but shine reflect
Like points of diamonds in a dream
Was that the better bet
Was that my fateful step
Long gone, a wide road, heaven sent
Yet I sought the darkened wood
Black as coal some might say
Was it some noble quest
Did I pass the test
Perhaps it should have been the golden fleece
Another fool crowned as king
Tempted by all things
Not to take by flight nor cringe
Best seek another road to explore
Yet I would probably once more
Even on a road abhorred
Chance again that weary road to darkened wood
