Are we mere fools to play on
Just strings upon your tricks
Queens of your very matrix
And the kings of your greatest hits
What happens when fall is over
Will there be crimson and clover
Who will record it all
For posterity — and next winter’s fall
What key do you play us in
Will you wear your hat of tin
And the tack from which you swing us
Will it revert to sin
…flagellation or chagrin
What key will you play us in
Perhaps D minor
Because the song is too sad
For something major, a level higher
Please sing it to us from on high
Most everything makes us cry
Divert our eyes
Invent new spies
We’re no fools — just victory tools
For we’ve bought your hits before
We know you wrote the score
We know how to adore
Bring in the weary from the broader
Transfix us in a new world order
Skirmishes at the border
Send us a message as a clue
Reach out to your greatest fans
And adopt the naked few
