Pinnacle Rock is a Galapagos landmark situated on Bartholomew Island. It is actually a plug formed from the erosion of a volcanic dike.

Bartholomew Island itself is a small unassuming rocky island with a rather other worldly appearance.

The tiny island sits off the coast of the much larger Santiago Island.

There are nice beaches on either side of the rock and at its base is a colony of penguins.

The waters around the rock are clear and the reef attracts sharks, rays and octopi. It is considered the best snorkeling opportunity in the Galapagos and offers the rare thrill of swimming with sea lions.

The unusual shape of Pinnacle Rock is said by some to be a natural occurrence while others say it was shaped via the US Air Force in World War 2 when there was a base on nearby Baltra Island.

They say pilots used the rocky island as target practice.

So perhaps the Pinnacle is a collaborative piece between the Earth and the US Airforce.
