Can we beat plowshares into swords*
Leave the farm before it dawns
Release the ewe before it’s shorn
Catch the cows before the storm
Teach your daughters to reform
Avert an army’s need to swarm
Tint the town before it’s brown
Turn the lights out before we drown
Conquer each and every hill
Build a dam before it spills
Enjoy the rain without a drain
Rule the earth without a crown
Make the truth stretch way downtown
Where it’s brown and where they frown
Before we go on summer break
Less our bucket and less our rake
Can we make the farm reborn
Put up trees and put up corn
Maybe even grow some lawn
A nature strip for dogs to roam
Make its mark and then go home
Where returns are worse for wear
Once a sword, now plow share*
To plant the seeds and then the deeds
Start the seasons all again
Grasp at straws and grasp at sin
Build afresh a new day morn
Fields of love and duty sworn
Not to kings and not to men
Just to sheep that they be shorn
And for cows — their new day dawn
