an american amalgamation
Oh fiery light upon the hill
That harkens me in winter chill
And damns the flake from its chaste
To light the path in darkness faced
Forewarn of scorn in lands war torn
A blaze still glows in winter’s throws
To awaken fields of rose in rows
Of sunken dreams by victories chose
The sweat of brow in cold laid dawns
Forgone lost ventures not avenged
A day not seized cannot pretend
In long lost days the flame decays
And when the odds be deemed the most
Upon the ridge the fire is stoked
And huddled masses — a teeming shore*
Provoke the rally to rise once more
Oh Liberty bright please shine on me
And light the path from whence I see
A despot’s urge — a trooper’s storm
To raise your torch o’er strife reborn
- “Huddled masses” and “teeming shore” are referenced from Emma Lazarus’ poem The New Colossus enshrined on a bronze plaque located in the pedestal of The Statue of Liberty
