I Wrote You In The Fall

I wrote you in the fall
I used a pen not a sword
I wanted it to be a call, that’s all
It was no chore, a bore, or tall order
An envelope and stamp
Alas I needed to make it clamp
So I got down nasty and made it damp
That may well have been a task
But before it I must ask:
What of this love of which must last?

While In a throng I did contend
A whisper warns me: make amends
Like the dearly departed or some lost friend
I’m out on the avenue
And there I fend
I’m not well guarded, I don’t pretend
As I prance about
Keep your phone — bring me my pen!
Doesn’t mean my heart is not free
And the sword is not for me

I’ve placed you on a pedestal
Alight before you fall
Others occupy their thrones
But it’s you I wish to call
Some are free to stay
While others are free to roam
Some do unto others
And others when in Rome
But I am not untrue, truly
I’m just free to choose
All are free to leave
I’m just here to lose
To lure you to my fall
To write you in the fall
To lick a stamp to make it damp
Even then chance you with a call
And if by trifle my love won’t bring
I’ll await the winter, I’ll await the spring
And then come summer, and then come fall…
