I Was the One

Did I not say you were bound to go far
Didn’t we concur while shooting the breeze
Did we not walk among the birds and the bees
Did I not become your je ne sais quoi
And didn’t you become my alma mater
Who taught me the ways that I shan’t go astray
Encouraged my pain, made me refrain
Counted the ways
Made me rephrase
And every so often accepted my praise
If I crawl on the ground
I could but just pray
Take in the sights and sounds of spring
Imagine the blossoms, allow them to sing
Attribute my needs, uncover the cause
Brush over the blemishes, gloss over the flaws
Walk bravely and tall through all the locked doors
Search for the meaning on vast distant shores
I was right all along — it just can’t be wrong
I’m entangled now with your heart and your song
Your rhythmic soul
The waves of your mind
The ingenious way you reinvent time
But I can’t just gift you free rule over me
Because one time I was the one
Of whom you were pleased
