I think it reveals a woman's strengths -- she is able to outwit an opponent [likely male] - she can be streetwise and yet sophisticated, waif like also -- she could be but a small girl [who's to say - but probably not] -- There is also the metaphor of greater society - and how the political class groom and take advantage of us -- this is of course the nineteenth century, so the theme of nothing being new under the sun comes to mind -- the seller acting out of greed is captured by Emma's "lesser status" she takes advantage by letting the price rise, which also helps knock any other potential bidder out of the contest - and given she won't be paying a dime, doesn't matter to her -- we see situations like this in business [or at least they do go on - even if we don't see them] for example property sales, although with a twist - but much shenanigans is at play there [bribes and what not] of that you can be sure - So the message is to not be so naive, nor so greedy, don't underestimate your opponent, nor anybody else -- there are many themes to take in! The world is full of trickery! 😎👍 Thank you for your interest, Kristi -- much appreciated! 🖤🤍
