Down in the darkened valley
Where they rot before they rally
Where no one goes in the know
Lest they reap before they sow
Where the law don’t keep no watch
As you creep from some hotchpotch
Your life of Riley, coke and scotch
Survives another budget botched
And the next affirmative action be
A collective infraction yet to see
A new kit home on fields of dreams
Where sixty-sixers pitch their seams
Where nothing is as it seems
Just four-seamers searchin’ dreams
A new estate, the first inmate
On a battleground they call it fate
The valley floor sinks between two plates
The supervisors make more mistakes
But none of them, far ’s I can see
Run inland empire’s properly
Especially when they know if for all
A curse was placed on eternity
Get outta that ghetto before you fall
To the cry of please just gimme more
This bitch, this hood, this evermore
This day to day before each score
Just start again — no metaphor
Seventy-seven was all American
Can’t see it now, can’t see it then
‘Cause you’re high ‘n dry inside your tent
