Family or Foe

…and, as long as your father told you

Thief art — MS Paint

We don’t go meekly
We must be squashed under a cab
We won’t surrender fleetingly
Always leaving a little piece unfed
We won’t stubbornly surrender
And live under another’s agenda
Pragmatism is our philosophy
Whether we like it or whether we do not
We might not choose survival
If delivered in the right eyeful
Especially when handed a rifle
And told the enemy are just over the hill
We will die for our once dear family
Maybe one day they might too
We know they’re waiting their chance
And another trip to Timbuktu
We will die for our children’s children
Just about goes without saying
For, we are made of iron
And enzymes — not ready for lying or dying
Nitrogen and phosphorus
So, self-destruction is less preposterous
Charged by electrical heat
Superimposed under rim and seat
We’re hard to scrub away
Back in the day slay or be slayed
But stick to it to overcome
Seared into granite like a planet
We know when we’ve sunken low
When the totem pole is slow
But our order is not for pecking
So, we survive — family or foe
